A visit to Mandola’s is always a fantastic, all-my-senses-are-tingling treat! And I mean that in a good way… yummy, yummy food, a warm and inviting dining atmosphere, and the desserts (OMG desserts!) are tops in my list. They even give me a cup (with my kid’s meal) for gelato when I’m finished eating… how cool is that?! I got the Spaghetti & Butter this time because I wanted something different, but I usually get the pepperoni pizza. You know how much I love my pepperoni pizza, right? A LOT. But today, I was feeling a little plain jane.
While we were waiting for the food to come, Dad had an idea! He took me over to the market section they have in the restaurant. It had different foods, drinks, and snacks from Italy, and Dad let me pick out a bag of chocolate chip cookies! He knows me so well! He also let me look at all the breads and cheeses that they had on display… it smelled soooo good! It was fun to look at all the different shapes, colors, and smells while we waited.
We got back to the table just in time for the food to be served. I noticed Mom had ordered her usual Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo but Dad didn’t order his usual Lasagna! That never happens! He ALWAYS orders the lasagna! Mom’s Alfredo is always a solid “go-to” option, but I guess Dad was feeling adventurous! He ordered something called Cannelloni Fiorentina – it had thin sheets of pasta wrapped around a stuffing of braised chicken, spinach, Romano & Fontina cheeses, and baked in a white sauce with some marinara. It was like an Italian chicken enchilada! He didn’t say a word the whole time – until he was finished. Typical. Mom finally broke the silence and asked me how I liked my food. I was totally happy with my Spaghetti & Butter (who doesn’t like spaghetti and BUTTER?!)… it was just what the doctor ordered. And plus, I had just enough room for dessert – gellllattttoooo, here I come!
Speaking of dessert, you can’t visit Mandola’s and not visit the DESSERT FEAST BAR. It’s not really called that – I made that up – but that’s what it looks like to me! I think it’s one of my Mom’s most favorite things in all of Austin. They have éclairs, chocolate cake, Italian cream cake, thumbprint cookies (my personal fave) and an espresso bar for the food coma you’ll get from eating here. They also stock a full gelato case. The raspberry gelato is my “today-favorite” but that changes each time I come here – kind of like their rotating flavors.
All in all, I always have fun and leave with a happy tummy whenever we eat at Mandola’s. I really enjoy the sights and sounds the restaurant has to offer and there’s even a pretty fountain outside where I made a wish! I hope my wish comes true… I’ll let you know if it does. Last but not least, there is a fun playscape only a short stroll across the parking lot. The padded faux-grass is easy on my knees, and it’s just the perfect size for me to enjoy while Mom & Dad relax. I hope you get a chance to go eat at Mandola’s. Even if you don’t want to play on the playscape, the food is delicious!
