One fine day, for lunch, we headed over to Sushi Sumo on Kirkwood Highway, in Newark, just a hop skip and jump away from Philly. Parking there is easy – it’s in a big plaza, so you never have to worry about finding a spot. It was a Saturday, around noon, but still fairly quiet, and as we walked in we noticed a cool pond with fish which mean we had built in entertainment until the hostess came over, which is always a big hit with mommy and daddy. We didn’t have a reservation, but were seated in an awesome fairly private room – they have a few that could seat about 8-10 and have a door that close. You know why that’s super awesome for toddlers? We could leave our chair and if mommy brought us a toy we could have played, and if we were a tad noisy we didn’t bother as many people, so a definite win for everyone. The other cool thing? There were already high chairs in this little private room ready for us.

The menus came quickly, and just like their weekday specials Saturdays have lunch specials at Sushi Sumo. They brought us water cups in plastic cups with straws, so easy to pick up and drink from. We got a mix of things, including some beef teriyaki, some shrimp tempura, some sushi (we love avocado rolls and salmon rolls because they’re cut small enough for our mouths), and, since we love dumplings of any kind, we got shumai, which are steamed shrimp dumplings. Mommy cut them for us in half and before we knew it we had eaten three orders of them, making us happy as can be! If you’re super picky, some rice is always an option, and while there is no actual kids menu there are things like chicken tempura could be presented to you as chicken fingers. The options are great here, even for those kids who wouldn’t normally think going to a sushi restaurant was a good thing!

Shrimp, beef, shumai and sushi. Yum!
